What does it take to raise great kids? If you've read any books on parenting, conflicting opinions have probably left you feeling confused. Get tough! Show acceptance. Lay down the rules. Lighten up, already! There's got to be a balance--and there is. Joining their expertise with the wisdom of MOPS International (Mothers of Preschoolers), Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend help you provide both the care and acceptance that make grace real to your child, and the firmness and discipline that give direction. Avoiding the twin extremes of permissiveness and over-control, Drs. At last, here is an effective middle ground for raising up children who will handle life with maturity and wisdom. Raising Great Kids will help you equip your son or daughter to accept life's responsibilities, grow from its challenges, and freely and fully explore all that it has to offer.

what's amazing about this book is how the authors skillfully teach their readers how to balance between permissiveness and control. in other words, how to raise your kids with grace and truth. the inside flap describes it well: "you'll learn how to provide both the care and acceptance that make grace real to your child, and the firmness and discipline that give direction."
as you implement these two keys into your parenting style, your goal becomes raising a child of character. the six main traits that then become the building blocks of great character are: attachment (ability to form relationships), responsibility (taking ownership of life), reality (accepting the negatives of the real world), competence (developing life skills), conscience (internal sense of right and wrong), and worship (God genuinely loves them! and they need to learn to seek Him for themselves--apart from their parents).
my professor used this book as a main textbook in class because it makes so much sense in how to wisely direct the growth of children--whether students or your own. older classmates kept commenting, "i wish i had this information before my children were grown up!" "hey, this works in my classroom!" "now i see where i went wrong in raising my kid" or "i'm buying copies of this book for all my parenting friends!" and for me, this book even showed me why i turned out the way i did...and now that i know the roots of my issues, i can fix it and improve in certain areas of my own life and provide better foundations for raising my own children.
life examples from the viewpoint of parents and children are given to make the concepts more real to the reader, and the authors also set aside chapters to give specific tips for the teenage years and for single parents. this book will not cease to wow you--whether you don't have kids yet, you are a young parent, you've been parenting for years, or your children have already left the nest. and if you really want to get into it, they've also written a workbook for parents of school-aged children that you can use to get deeper into the book--a great resource to work through with your spouse, a friend, or a small group! by the way, this book is highly recommended by MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) international!
