This is a classic text and indispensable for any library on World War Two in Europe. It was a groundbreaking study of the war on the Eastern Front. With its companion volume, The Road to Berlin, it gives phenomenal detail of the operational history on this decisive theatre of the Second World War. Written and researched as it was, at a time of very difficult access to Soviet sources, it is a massive achievement. No other overall history of the war on the Eastern Front rivals it for detail, I believe, to this day. It gives detailed, high quality descriptions of the German invasion, the battle for Moscow and the early phases of the Battle of Stalingrad.
I must express some reservations. This volume/edition has NO maps. This is a serious disadvantage and makes some of the accounts of operational manoeuvres very hard to follow.
Sometimes the sheer level of detail is bewildering, as in Chaper One on the political background. In places, less detail and more explanatory overview would have helped me.
It is these reservations that make me give 4 stars, not the 5 the book deserves for the magnificent effort which went into it. 4 stars+ would probably be fairer.
This is definitely a book not to be missed by anyone interested in this subject. It takes considerable effort and concentration to read but it rewards this handsomely.
