Of forty-three villages and forms a belt about thirty miles from north to south and ten to fifteen broad. Except a few rugged villages at the foot of the Bevda pass, about twentyofour miles south; west of Kolhapur, most of the kolhapur-konkan is composed of level tablelands. These uplands were formerly thickly wooded with teak and other useful trees, but all the valuable timba' has long been out leaving bars or scrub-clad hillsides. The village sites as a rule are well wooded and the village homesteadsare surrounded by groves of mango, jack, and undi trees, and in Pomburle, Koklsre, Khambale, and Nilnivde b cocoa and betel palms. The climate is healthy, though in A r' and May the heat is oppressive. The two outl mg blocks in t e east, Raybag and Torgal, lie far within the its of the Deccan plain.
