Aberwas ihn dabei tr�stete, wardas Gef�hl, durch seiner H�nde Arbeit seinen Kindern die Mittel zu einem weniger anstren genden Leben und zu einer freieren Stellung zu erwerben. SO war es denn auch sein Grundsatz, die S�hne ganz nach eigener Neigung sich entwickeln zu lassen. Anfangs (1830 1882) in einer Privatschule, dann(1832 - 1837) in der k�nig lichen Hofschule unterrichtet, trat Ludwig Michaelis 1837 in die h�here B�rgerschule seiner Vaterstadt ein. In die sem f�r Hannover so verh�ngnissvollen Jahre, unter dem Einflusse eines leidenschaftlichen und mittheilsamen Vaters, der trotz seiner Stellung zum Hofe der Opposition ange h�rte, begann bei dem Knaben das Interesse f�r die politi schen Angelegenheiten und �berhaupt ein Fortschritt der ganzen geistigen Entwicklung. Bald erkannte der Vater die Begabung des Sohnes und wies ihn darauf hin, dass die wissenschaffliche Besch�ftigung wohl die geeignetste f�r ihn sein m�ge. Freilich scheint damals bei der Wahl des k�nftigen Berufes die Philologie noch nicht im Vordergmnde gestanden zu haben, und Lange hat wohl selbst sp�ter ge. Sagt, dass er sich ebenso gut f�r das Studium der Rechte h�tte entscheiden k�nnen, wenn nicht der Stand des Vaters dem Eintritt in die Beamtencarriere nach damaligen Ah schauungen widersprochen h�tte. Auf jeden Fall sollte Ludwig studiren, und um dies zu k�nnen, in das Lyceum eintreten. Zu diesem Zwecke musste er w�hrend des letz ten Jahres auf der B�rgerschule zun�chst das Griechische durch Privatunterricht nachholen.
