Of Scotland, when immured in Windsor Castle, writing, or at least collecting the materials of his King's Qubair than Tasso making to him wings with which to fly from the hospital of St Anne, where he was inju riously confined, to the summits of the delectable mountains of poetry; than Sir Walter Raleigh soaring from the Tower to Ararat, to Lebanon, to the Seven Hills of Rome, while producing his great History of the World; or than Bunyan dreaming his wondrous Pilgrim's Progress in the damp dungeon at Bed ford - his body bound, while his soul was travelling to and back again from that city which hath no need of the sun. The sup posed case of Caleb Williams illustrates principally the force of dauntless resolution, blended with contemptuous defiance of the world; the real story of Bunyan displays the power of piety and of faith, as well as of uncontrollable genius.
