Excerpt from The Question Relating to a Scots Militia Considered: In a Letter to the Lords and Gentlemen Who Have Concerted the Form of a Law for That Establishment Oi all the wonders that have been perform cd by the prefent adminiflration, the efiablilh ment of a national militia, though not the mofi mining, is far the greatel't, whether we confider the obfiacles that were to be removed, or the confequences that mull follow. When the battles of Minden, (mebec, and Bellei e {hall only ferve to adorn the page of the hifio rian, the militia will continue, to give liberty, firength, and feeurity to Great Britain; and the reign of George II. Will thence derive a glory, that in future times will appear fuperior to the greatef't increafe of dominion, or of trade. Improvements in policy, it is true, feldom arife but from prefiing occafions; and the zeal of the wifel't patriots is found unable to produce remarkable changes, except when it 21615 in relief of fome real complaint. Happy is that'nation where the minif'ters are capable of taking advantage of fuch neeefiities to form lafiing and national infiitutions, infiead of patching up the fiate with temporary and felf ilb expedients.
