Excerpt from A Narrative of the Rise and Progress of Emigration From the Counties of Lanark Renfrew to the New Settlements in Upper Canada on Government Grant In the Introduction to his Narrative of the Rise Progress of Emigration from the Counties of Lanark Renfrew to the New Settlements in Upper Canada, Robert Lamond prov1des an overview of the conditions that resulted in some 2900 Scots voluntarily emigrating during 1820 and 1821 to the Perth or Johnstown District of Upper Canada In short, the distressful years 1816-1820 culminated in the formation of various Emigration Societies in and about Glasgow during the spring of 1820 for the purpose of petitioning for government assistance towards emigration and for soliciting public subscrip tions in support of the same. As Agent and Secretary for the Committee who supermtended the Emigration Societies, Lamond had first hand knowledge of the organizational work undertaken by the Glasgow Committee in securing and chartering good passage vessels, in conducting ship inspections demanding for the times, and in the effluent management of resources so much so that for later passages the emigrants received a small balance of cash upon arrival at Quebec. The purpose of Lamond's Narrative was to collect the fragmentary information bearing on Scottish Emigration particularly from Counties Lanark and Renfrew and to put it in connected form to serve both as instructions for future Emigrants and as a history of the foundation of a Scottish Colony.
