This consisted of brass and copper coins, which had been manufactured to meet the necessity of the case, bearing on one Side the arms of the Grand Master and of the Order, and on the other Side the inscription, non [es sed fides. Each of these coins possessed a current value, and was held as a promissory note would be payable on demand as soon as ever the exchequer of the Order should be replenished and to the credit of La Vallette be it said, that as remittances arrived in the island from the continent, this Spurious currency was gradually withdrawn, SO that throughout the whole progress of the work public confidence was not for one moment Shaken.
