Excerpt from On Retro-Peritoneal Hernia: Being the 'Arris and Gale' Lectures on 'the Anatomy and Surgery of the Peritoneal Fossļæ½', Delivered at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1897 This volume contains the lectures which, as 'arris and Gale' lecturer, I had the honour of delivering at the Royal College Of Surgeons in February and March of this year. The subject of retro-peritoneal hernia has received less than adequate attention from English surgeons in the past. The condition is not an exceptionally rare one, for, in addi tion to the cases recorded, I have found a few undescribed specimens in the London museums. The photographs of all the specimens that exist in the museums of England and Scotland, so far as I have been able to ascertain, are placed at the end of the book. My attention was first drawn to the subject by a case which occurred at the Leeds General Infirmary some years ago. Several of those present at the post-mortem examina tion of this case attempted an explanation of the peritoneal conditions which existed. The discussion interested me, and ever since I have made, both in the dissecting-room and. When Opportunity occurred, in the post-mortem-room, a long series Of Observations. The result has been that I have been able to describe from actual, prolonged, and repeated Observa tion, a large number Of peritoneal fossaz, some of which had either escaped recognition altogether, or early descriptions of them had been lost sight of.
