The de Warenne stories are good. The premise of one love only for life is unusual in the era with so many men having mistresses. Thus, a de Warenne falling in love at 2 or in childhood is really a cross to bear. But bear up she does. She even resigns herself to duty with another man as his wife for her true love is lost for 4 years and appears dead. Only he is not. Suffering greatly, Sam is not typical of the heros of the time. Married into the de Warenne family by his mother - he is a step brother to Elle. Thus one would think he would not be caught by the "one" only in his life. On a mission to flee the country from false charges of treason (he has been in a prison hole for 2 years and only just escaped), he stops at his childhood home only to see his family (from afar - so he thinks) one last time. Of course he is unaware it really is to see Elle. 3 days before her marriage he shows up. His ship is not sailing for the Americas for 2 more days, he can hide there on the land. She is headstrong and finds him on a solitary ride. Determined to never lose him again, she sets upon a plan of action to save him - from the charges and himself. But, can a man so broken be fixed? Stirring up memories, Sam cannot tear himself from Elle. Not until he has done a dastardly deed. On flight from the army, she calls and he answers. This puts her in danger as well. They flee together - her trying to "fix" him. Him trying to get her to safety before he leaves. His whole family is scheming too. To get him away and to clear his name. There are times when Elle is hurt imensely by Sam - for her feelings are just too raw. They fight, make up, love and hate. It is a good story. You will have to read it to know all the twists. They are small twists directed soley upon the revenge of one man bent to catch Sam. This is wholey a story about a girl in love, not giving up and the healing of one man beyond redemption and saving. Good book. Not like the rest of the stories revolving around arranged marriages, the ton and British society.
