This story is about an Earl, Devin, who has wasted his title and money in unhealthy pursuits due to a scandal years ago that made his father disown him. Now, down on his luck and owing money to the most unsavory people, he is forced to marry an American heiress to get out of the hole he dug. The heiress, Miranda, is smart, outspoken and leads men by their noses. The two clash at first and refuse an alliance between the families. Devin feels he is being forced because none of his peers would align with his family because of his abdomiable pursuits and Miranda doesn't care to marry an self centered egotisticl lord of the realm. Of course the parents on both sides want it because his family will face penury if the marriage does happen and her family wants to restore his estate in the country, a hobby of sorts, and wants to enter into the Londons society of the Ton. So the marriage happens only because Mirands gets to see that Devin isn't quite as he appears after she sees some painting of his in his earlier years. She tells him that it will be a marriage in name only if he can't give up his vices which include a married mistress he has loved for years. Not being able to do that, he accepts. After several attempts on his new brides life after they marry and start restoring the castle and going over the estate books to get the money back in order, Devin realizes after a while that he wants to be a true husband to his wife and give up everything to do just that. Finally they find out who is trying to kill her and why. It is a story about a good woman helping a bad boy become a good man.
