Eu ce moment, il caressait d'ailleurs sa chim�re, un d�sir d�j� vieux de douze ans, un d�sir de pr�tre! Un d�sir qui, form� tous les soirs, paraissait alors pr�s de s'accomplir; enfin, il s'enve loppait trop bien dans l'aumusse d'un canonicat pour sentir les intemp�ries de l'air pendant la soir�e, les personnes habituelle ment r�unies chez madame de Listom�re lui avaient presque garanti sa nomination � la place de chanoine, alors vacante au chapitre m�tropolitain de saint-gatien, en lui prouvant que personne ne la m�ritait mieux que lui, dont les droits, longtemps m�connus, �taient incontestables.
