This volume presents a collection of papers concerned with the modern application of statistics in medicine. The main themes covered are hypothesis testing, epidemiological modelling and prediction, the use of computational tools, and diagnostic applications. The aim of the volume is to present a survey which will provide statisticians and researchers in the medical sciences with accounts of techniques of current interest and which discuss the underlying statistical issues in a clear and straightforward manner. Some of the papers discuss topical concerns such as the modelling of the spread of AIDS, the effect of radiation on the incidence of leukaemia, and "stopping rules" in clinical trials, whilst other papers address issues such as the use of expert systems and statistical techniques for medical diagnosis.
