This book is for someone who already knows a lot about the history of Ireland or can have a map sitting next them while they read. Throughout the book there is a mix of names, places, and events that are not described very clearly and go by very quickly. However, some sections about the town life and villages are very interesting and clear. This book, as with most history books, is trying to cover a wide time span in a short amount of time with more emphases going towards the later centuries. However, each chapter is written by a different person so some are easier to understand and have more context than others. Even though there is a variety of writing styles, many sections are very boring, and it is difficult not to let your mind wonder daydreaming about the way Ireland might have been if there never had been an English invasion. The book does give a very good description of just how Ireland became divided into the Protestants and the Catholics. I would think this book would also be difficult to contextualize without some detailed knowledge of the history of England and the order and history of the Kings of England. Overall, the Oxford History of Ireland is definitely not something anyone would want to just read to have a light overview.
