Drem, a young boy living in what is now Southern England, during the bronze age is just like the other boys in his village with one exception: he can only use his left arm. He has never noticed the difference until his grandfather tells him that he will never earn the right to wear scarlet cloth, the cloth reserved only for the warriors of his tribe. Drem sets out to prove his grandfather, and other members of his village, wrong as he moves from childhood into adulthood. There are triumphs and sets backs as he learns the craft of hunting and warfare with the other boys his age. Then comes his test of manhood. Will he win the right to wear warrior scarlet and what will happens if he fails the test?
Excellently written with vivid descriptions, fine characterization and a surprizing ending, Warrior Scarlet is a great book for young adults and adults of all ages.
