This text is designed to provide the student, in vivid and readily assimilable form, a means of acquiring a clear understanding of the basis of the many diseases that he or she will encounter in clinical practice, whether in hospital or in general practice. As an "Atlas", its purpose is to convey information in a visual form and to complement existing textbooks. In this revised edition, the text has been completely rewritten, the emphasis being on the changing pattern of disease incidence. The illustrations, chosen to cover 95% of the lesions which the doctor will encounter in hospital practice cover nearly twice the area of the previous edition and carry more information. The majority of the illustrations are based on paraffin sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, though other techniques eg using cryostat sections have been included. Most are concerned with cases dealt with in the course of routine hospital service. The book contains a chapter on each of the main systems or organs of the body. There is also an introductory chapter which aims to demonstrate the more important reactions of the tissues in disease and at the same time teach the student the basic language of histopathology. This feature has been extended in this edition to include a limited amount of clinical information about the lesion and its pathogenesis with each illustration.
