The first edition of this book was the result of a two-year research project designed to obtain a detailed picture of the status of alternative medicine in the UK and to some extent internationally. This edition has been partly rewritten, expanded and made more up-to-date. The book examines the developing social position of alternative medicine covering legal, political, scientific, educational and demographic aspects. It examines why people go to complementary practitioners, how many do so and what happens during and after treatment. There is a review of the theoretical, practical and research aspects of each therapy, written by leading practitioners in collaboration with the author. These chapters are intended as a guide for the professional reader who has no prior knowledge of alternative medicine. The last part of the book is a resource guide covering all the significant colleges, professional bodies and societies within the field and gives information on some 250 organizations. This new edition charts the increase in interest in complementary medicine in the last few years among medical professionals and the public. Topics covered include the latest research, electroacupuncture and nutrition therapy.
