A visit from a boyhood acquaintance in need of help leads Maigret to investigate the murder of the man's good-hearted lover. Problems arise when evidence repeatedly points to the boyhood "friend" as the murderer, and Maigret must untangle the links with the woman's numerous lovers to find the truth of the matter. Another excellent work by Simenon in which Chief Inspector Maigret's unrelenting investigation and knowledge of human nature lead him and his team to the culprit.
