Hilarious. Mocks the French in a Monty Python manner.

Charming; bitter sweet.
This is a charming novel, somewhat dated at times, and more apparently so when the author states that in the year 19?, but dated or not, it has relevance to the now of Europe, France, the World in general. It?s a novel that deals very capably, but with great humour, with the human frailties of pride, honour, selfishness, self-aggrandisement and primarily, duty.
Although this writing, by the master of description, John Steinbeck has neither the grittiness of The Grapes of Wrath, nor the vast, descriptive eloquence and stunning word pictures of landscape, of East of Eden, nor the deeply sad philosophising of The Winter of Our Discontent, it has some of the loveliest passages that will make one want to read them and read again.
The action doesn?t take place in Cannery Row; neither in Tortilla Flat, but in a quiet and safe arondissment in Paris. Read The Short Reign of Pippin IV and you will learn to love and admire another human being? a human being with aspirations, strengths, weaknesses and honesty. But a great man perfect for a world not ready for him as yet.
