Written in London during the Blitz, the Lion and the Unicorn section explores the strengths, tendencies, and inconsistencies of British character under stress with an eye to better times ahead, in many ways an explanation of the move to Brexit. Why I Write reveals further his distrust of political ideology.

The quote of the front of the book says it all: Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. In writing 1984 and Animal Farm Orwell investigated the totalitarian state and basically showed how bad it was and is. I recommend these two books and this primer to his writing to anyone interested in how the totalitarian state is run.
