Dylan Thomas, one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, captures a child's eye view of a magical Christmas Day in a small Welsh town, with uncles and aunties, singsongs, presents (some useful, some not) and lots of snow. The beautiful, lyrical prose is vividly brought to life by Edward Ardizzone's wonderful line illustrations. This modern classic which celebrates 50 years since first publication, will delight everyone with its marvellous tales of the fun and excitement of what it is like to be a child at Christmas.

This is a beautiful example of how a gifted illustrator can expand the intention of the author. Trina Schart Hyman is excellent at bringing out pertinent moments in this beautiful remembrance of Dylan Thomas's Christmas.
Sadly out of print, but thankfully still available.

Child's Christmas in Wales
I absolutely adore this book. The images it conjures, the story Dylan Thomas wrote, the cadence of the narration, the illustrations. I first purchased this book for my daughter as a Christmas present in 1986 when she was 6. She's now 30 and took her childhood books to her new home, so I had to get my own copy. The story made me want to see the movie and it's been a tradition ever since to watch it faithfully every Christmas Eve. I never tire of it. Denholm Ellitot and his "grandson" in the movie are so charming, the narration done so beautifully, it is one of my favorite things and always will be.
