Spolit, feckless Temple Drake, the daughter of a judge, runs away from school with an unsuitable man. Abandoned by him with a gang of moonshiners, Temple falls into the clutches of the psychotic Popeye, one of the most grotesque characters of Faulkner's imagination. A compelling, shocking tale of perverted justice in the Deep South, Sanctuary is also a moving plea for courage in the darkest of circumstances.

the hints of the books of mr faulkner are understandable even for me, with unluckily lacking notions of english and notably of slang. Maybe it's the reason that I enjoy the powerful sound of the language, even if i don't get the exact meaning of every single word. Anyway, i'm looking forward to read as many books of mr falkner as i can get

Not his greatest, but readable.
Even though I'm not Faulkner's number one reader, and even if Sanctuary is not his best book, by far, it still is an interesting read. His writing technique can be applauded when reading his descriptions of the prohibition-era, which he makes seem like a hot inescapable hellhole. None of the characters did I find interesting by themselves, but I ignored this, and focussed on each personage's quest for a sanctuary, because ultimately, even the dogs at the prostitute bar are looking for one. The evil character, Popeye, even though he's not the greatest antagonist, is an antecedent for such characters as Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men assasin. I'd give it three of five stars.
