"The Essential Cosmic Perspective is designed as a textbook for college courses in introductory astronomy, but is suitable for any-one who is curious about the universe. We assume no prior knowledge of astronomy or physics, and the book is especially written for students who do not intend to major in mathematics or science. The Essential Cosmic Perspective is the mid-level of the three general astronomy textbooks we offer. Our longer book, The Cosmic Perspective, provides a comprehensive survey of modern astronomy with enough depth to fill a two-semester introductory astronomy sequence. This book, The Essential Cosmic Perspective, is trimmed down to fit what can realistically be covered in a one-semester survey of astronomy, though it may also be used with two-semester sequences. I bought the 2012 edition, custom printed for a particular university, which turns out to be in 3-ring binder format. I'm getting back into astronomy and wanted a review, it's been 40 years since I took it as an undergrad. This text is very readable, paper is thin but print quality excellent. I was expecting a treatment with more mathematical rigor, but as a result this is more of a fun read. This is a non-science major's text. It is very well written and better yet, written in an interesting fashion with good historical side notes. That makes it fun to read as well as comprehensible. Very little science or math background is assumed or necessary. There are extensive illustrations, generally very well done.
