A concise introduction to the great variety of groups and activities that make up the American religious picture in the 1990s. The text presents the academic study of religion within the context of the humanities, discussing religion in a spirit of mutual exploration and learning. It describes religious groups and activities, and organizes content into "concensus" and "alternative" religions. The work covers religion as it is found in churches, synagogues and temples, as well as movements that are distinctly religious in character but are not related directly to organized religion. Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism are all examined, as are the Black Church, New Age movement and feminist spirituality. Special attention is paid to women in religion, and the study discusses the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. It also discusses discrimination and prejudice. Coverage is included of the forms of Christianity that began in the United States in the 1800s. Other areas covered include: American Civil Religion; religious changes in the 1990s; and public and private Judaism.
