I attended a private girls' highschool where Latin was a 4 year requirement and I was one of a trio of close friends. This made for great fun in the reading. Interestingly enough, my first name is Deirdre,. So I was really hooked early on. Sadly she dies. So did a lot of other characters, and all of them young, but this is, after all, a murder mystery, so what's a murder or four!.
Certainly well-written...I loved the continued metaphors and allusions to the lake, i.e. "drowning in depression", and other allusions such as the heart/.ceour will bring you back.. (We also took French) I thought this was a red-herring that there might be something supernatural lurking in the plot. Not!
Keeping track of everyone's names...English and Latin, was challenging. Lots of subplots, too. I spotted the love affair between Matt and Lucy early on, but not their true relationship until the end. Therein was the tragedy.
Our school was not a boarding school, and there were, of course, none of those strange happenings in our lives. But the sense of familiarity was intriguing and made for marvelous reading. All three of us read it and are about to critique it in a small book club.
I thought Albie was a stretch as the killer, but on second reading, there were just a few more hints...though not many. A great book for anyone looking for an unusual, out-of-the-ordinary mystery/novel/tragedy that challenges you to really think. The adventures of these three(six) unusual girls who seemed to be interchangeable at first, ..as well as their teachers., kept me on my toes. Names! Names! Names! Take notes!
Perhaps a reader who has not had my background might find the book dark and eerie. In fact, I am sure of that.
All three of us loved it. Just a tad scarey!

A fun beach read. It is suspensful and I didn't predict the end. (I also don't read this genre very often so I don't have practice figuring them out). Goodman writes in a way that makes the lake one of the characters.
