This is by far one of my favorite books about Japan covering the early post-war period. What makes the book interesting and rare is that it is one of few from that time written by a Westerner who was not an American or Brit, the two cultures that had dominated Japanology since before WWII and in the immediate decades thereafter. His perspective is unique for that reason.
