Orphaned in his early teens. he joined the Canadian Militia, fought against the Fenians, and was on the Red River Expedition against Louis Riel's Metis. He joined the new North-West Mounted Police and took part in the epic march west to Fort Edmonton. In his career with the NWMP he was involved in many of the historic episodes of the Canadian West-the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the North-West Rebellion of 1885, the Gold Rush of 1898...From 1899 to 1901 he fought in the South African War and spent the next five years in the South African Constabulary, returnining to Canada in 1907 (where this autobiography ends).
