For 50 years, Edward M. Purcell's classic textbook has introduced students to the world of electricity and magnetism. The third edition has been brought up to date and is now in SI units. It features hundreds of new examples, problems, and figures, and contains discussions of real-life applications. The textbook covers all the standard introductory topics, such as electrostatics, magnetism, circuits, electromagnetic waves, and electric and magnetic fields in matter. Taking a nontraditional approach, magnetism is derived as a relativistic effect. Mathematical concepts are introduced in parallel with the physics topics at hand, making the motivations clear. Macroscopic phenomena are derived rigorously from the underlying microscopic physics. With worked examples, hundreds of illustrations, and nearly 600 end-of-chapter problems and exercises, this textbook is ideal for electricity and magnetism courses. Solutions to the exercises are available for instructors at ...

The first edition of this book was the volume 2 of Berkeley physic course.
Close to the experiment, and using only math when it is necessary, its purpose of this collection was to introduce the electromagnetism for undergraduate student.
It was written only at that time by Purcell, Nobel prize and it was the most famous book of the 5 Berkeley physic course. its approach to electromagnetism was based on special relativity
In the 2000's, the publisher stopped to publish Berkeley physic course for more modern books. Cambridge university and other institutions were unhappy to loose this original book. Cambridge press still decide to publish it. They asked Purcell to rewrite this volume 2 into a stand alone book. Indeed some topics about special relativity was written in volume 1 of Berkeley course and for electromagnetic waves, it was written in volume 3 of Berkeley. Consequently, Purcell transformed his first edition book into this second and third one, as stand alone book.
It is important to note that this book is a introduction for undergraduate student only. It is focusing an experiment and physical properties. For engineer school, the lecture of introduction in electromagnetism for engineer are much more related to math computation. We used only this book to understand physically how is a magnetic fields. It is much more advance as this book.
