"It Worked for Me" is a collection of lessons and personal anecdotes that have shaped four star-general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell's legendary career in public service. At its heart are Powell's "13 Rules", notes he accumulated on his desk that are now the basis for his leadership presentations throughout the world. Powell's short-but-sweet rules such as Get mad, then get over it and Share credit, are illuminated by revealing personal stories that introduce and expand on his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and above all, respect for others. "In work and life", Powell writes, "It is the human gesture that counts".

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The chapters were short and concise, delivering messages in a direct style. The book delivers many excellent points on not only the attitude you bring to work, but also on developing a supervision and/or management style. There is even a chapter on how to leave your assignment and move on. The book also contains much humor on just observations of life in general, especially Chapter 40 "On the Road" had me rolling in laughter. As a frequent traveler I agreed with the items raised by General Powell. Overall, I highly recommend this book. It is very easy to read and you can start reading it at any point. The subjects contained in each chapter are self contained and do not rely on the previous or following chapters.
