First thing's first, this was such an addicting book I finished it in one day (had church so I couldn't exactly...you get the point) and I was just blown away. So just to get it out there, if you like supernatural books or even if you don't, you should definitely give this a try. Seriously. Go.
Okay, getting into the review. Let me repeat, this book is very addicting. Just, everything about it is addicting. Bridget Liu is figuring out her new power, she can hear demons and send them back to the hell they came from. Sort of like a ghost whisperer, but for demons. And it's probably a lot less fun, at least in my point of view. Instead of telling her friends or confiding in her parents, she goes to the town's master exorcist Monsignor Renault. He teaches her how to control her powers and use them to exorcise the different demons that have been popping up around town by the dozens.
The Vatican is pretty worried about the sudden increase of demon appearance in town and send a priest to investigate. As Bridget grows into her power, she discovers that some people aren't exactly what they seem. When a porcelain doll delivers a haunting message from...pause for effect, her father, Bridget begins to find out the secrets of her family and understand just how much power she has and how much danger she's in. The plot of the story pretty much speeds up from there and goes all crazy pretty fast.
Let's talk characters.
Bridget is far from your average YA heroine. Well, at least in my point of view. The way that Gretchen McNeil writes from her perspective really gives you an insider view on her emotions which are on a crazy tumble all over the place. I just found her really easy to relate to. Peter is Bridget's best friend. Somewhere along the book, I am pretty sure he gets demon possessed because he starts having this crazy mood swings and jealous tantrums. Yeah, Peter's got a crushy on Bridget, but she's not that interested. Anyway, I was so shocked at the way Gretchen played out his fate and yes, I cried. Matt is the "cutie" of the story. In a lot of ways, he's everything a girl can ask for in a guy. Super good looking, popular, sporty, caring, compassionate, everything. Yet, he seems to tick Bridget off a lot. Don't worry, they get over their differences and I guess you can say things work out. He becomes this huge support system for her.
Time to talk adults. Monsignor is well, a fire encased in sugar. You do not want to get on his bad side. Father Santos, the priest from the Vatican comes off super shady, but he'll show his true colors as the story goes along. Hugh Darlington, hate this man with a passion. After her father's death, he's one of the first men to get in line to woo her now single mother and he happened to be one of his dad's best friends. Way to be a bro man...seriously. He's one of those people who, when you discover their true colors blows you away. His daughter Alexa also gives me major b..... vibes and is annoying as heck.
The ending. (Haha) This is like I think, one of the first books I've read this entire year that had a nice conclusion of an ending. Goddess of the Sea was another, but I can't remember any others off the top of my head. The ending was super satisfying, like the feeling you have after eating a ginormous meal and you're full and very happy. But the road to get to that satisfaction, man it was action packed a super intense!
I highly recommend this book for it's action, cute teenage romance, and a hint of demonic possession. It's super thrilling and addicting which I think is always a great combination!
