After only having recently discovered James Rollins' I have quickly become a huge fan of his books. If action-packed, fast paced, slickly written adventure/thriller/suspense novels are you thing, then I'm sure you will be a big fan too.
Subterranean, is no exception to the above description but is also one of his weaker novels in my opinion. Although still told at a rip-snorting pace and still a fantastic page-turning adventure yarn, I also found this one demanded a much greater suspension of disbelief than the other novels I have read by him.
Set deep under a volcanic Antarctic island, Subterranean is something of a modern Journey To The Centre Of The Earth. The story revolves mainly around a group of specialists and their navy seal escorts, who are sent out to explore the mineral wealth and layout of a newly discovered and massive system of caves and tunnels found underneath said island.
However, they soon find out the caves have not been abandoned for millions of years, but instead have become like a land lost in time, fraught with both wonders and dangers alike and it soon becomes a fight to survive and escape back to civilisation.
I did enjoy this book, hence the 4 star rating, but there were a few niggles. One dimensional characters, a somewhat annoying romance angle and the occasional brain-defying sequence of events are a feature of this novel but if you can ignore those, then there is a highly entertaining read to be found here.
