An excellent history of the Civil War, including side notes such as the Corps of Engineers struggles. Jakes does a masterful job of wrapping a fine fiction story of two families (one in the North and one in the South) throughout the war. Also provides perspective on all aspects: political, slaves, society classes. A great work - I enjoyed more than "Gone with the Wind". I highly recommend.

The Blue and Gray Series carries on
Jakes continues the excellent beginning of volume one of this series. All the characters continue in the saga. Jakes has done his historical research well, and there will be some new details of the Civil War for the appreciative reader. Nice weaving of fiction with this huge event in US history.
