Seller's Description:
New. There is such a thing as 'chronological snobbery' in reverse: instead of uncritically equating newer with truer or better, reverse chronological snobs assume the opposite, and condemn the new as inevitably a corruption and decline from the old. The opinions of either type of chronological snob are very predictable. Fr. Jonathan Robinson of the Oratory offers something different: a trenchant critique of post-Vatican II celebration of the Mass (of these there are many) and a call for a 'reform of the reform, ' but constructed upon an unusually perceptive analysis of modernity itself and its role in forming the assumptions of the post-Conciliar liturgical reformers. Fr. Robinson believes that 'ideas have hooks, ' and that unsuspected sources lie beneath the ideals of those responsible for implementing Vatican II's liturgical directives. Regarding these, he is charitable yet uncompromising: 'I contend that in trying to deal with modernity, the reformers of the Catholic liturgy have taken wrong turnings and made mistakes...I do not think that turning the wrong way and making mistakes are always the result of stupidity or ignorance or arrogance or even wickedness...On the other hand, wrong turnings and blind alleys are just that, and mistakes are mistakes. This is true even if the intentions in racing down dead-end streets are as authentic as anyone could wish and the motives for making mistakes seem to be pure as crystal. ' In this spirit, he proceeds to analyze the debilitating elements of modernity (laid at the doors of Hegel, Hume, and Kant, mostly), reject the critique of modernity offered by Postmodernity, and propose a renewal (relying on sources ancient as the Pseudo-Dionysian writings and contemporary as Newman) by return to the theology of the Mass as an entering into the passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Christ.
