Hewitt held a deep fascination for equine pedigrees and genetics and wrote a series of articles examining the most influential early to mid-20th-century American stallions. These articles became Sire Lines. 88 stallions are profiled including Man O'War and his sons, War Admiral and War Relic: the Gray Ghost, Native Dancer; Triple Crown winner Count Fleet; and the undefeated Ribot. Eight-time leading sire Bold Ruler is discussed as part of the prolific Phalaris line while early 20th century stand-outs such as Black Toney, Broomstick and Blue Larkspur receive their due. Also looked at are stallions that made an impact on Thoroughbred breeding in England and France, including the brilliant Hyperion and Tourbillion.
