Seller's Description:
VG. Size: 0x0x0; Oversized. Although it is intriguing to note that the paintings I studied were painted by a member of one of modern China's most progressive and industrious families, what I find most captivating about them is their artistic integrity. An obviously exceptional talent has achieved what I thought to be aesthetically impossible: a coherent synthesis of Western abstraction and Chinese literalism. Many Chinese immigrants to the West have succeeded in their new environments and, at the same time, have struggled to maintain measures of their old existences. The United States has been an exceptional home for these efforts. Few immigrants to the "Beautiful Country, " however, have harmonized the two cultures the way that Dorothy Yung has in her painting. The complex feelings of the painter emerge as bright colors and strong shapes on canvas. These colors and shapes are tutored by the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy that she practiced as a child in Shanghai. Brush strokes represent-ing natural forces harmonize with a vivid chromatic range to produce startling messages. The new style is both energetic and daring. Perhaps reflecting the enthusiasm of her "Yung" spirit, the artist takes many technical chances. She does not sketch her complicated designs on canvas before she applies paint. Rather, she spontaneously expresses what she feels. Years of calligraphy drills guide her compositions so that they never approach the meaningless anarchy of many abstract works. It is this willful application of color anchored by ancient Chinese calligraphic forms that gives her paintings a sincerity rarely found in other syncretic works of art. There is nothing artificial about this yoking of two traditions so remote from one another in time and place. 44 pages.
