Seller's Description:
8vo. xxxi, [1], 278, [2] pp. Frontisp., numerous plates. Light gray publisher's cloth, white lettering on front cover & spine, colour plate mounted on front cover (slight bumping head of spine, very minor rubbing & shelfwear to corners, minor dustoiling & thumbing, some rubbing to spine), still a VG-copy. First edition of this journal kept by Muir and reported in the San Francisco Daily Bulletin originally. He had been recruited to sail aboard the Corwin to search for the lost Arctic expeditionary vessel and crew of the Jeannette, which itself became stuck in the ice off Wrangell Island. This expedition provided Muir an excellent opportunity to study glaciers in the Siberian and Alaskan Arctic, and the culture of the native Inuit and Chukchis.
