Seller's Description:
Sara Eisenman (Jacket Design) Very good in Very good jacket. xi, [1], 287, [3] pages. Notes. Index. Foreword by Wilma Mankiller. Inscribed by author on title page. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Jean V. Hardisty (June 18, 1945-March 16, 2015) was a political scientist and lesbian feminist activist who became a national resource for human rights movements seeking social and economic justice and an end to bigotry based on race, gender, or class. She was a senior scholar with the Wellesley Centers for Women. Hardisty received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Illinois, taught briefly, and in the 1980s left academia to conduct a study of the anti-feminist women's movement for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. She predicted a massive organized right-wing backlash which saw the rise of the New Right and the election of Ronald Reagan as President in 1980. She then founded the think tank which became Political Research Associates in Massachusetts to study Right-wing movements nationwide. Her study "Constructing Homophobia" was included in her book Mobilizing Resentment: Conservative Resurgence from the John Birch Society to the Promise Keepers. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Community Change. Jean Hardisty, draws a map of the political battles now being fought in America and offers lessons for progressives confronting, combating and constructively engaging the Right in more productive ways. In this provocative book, Jean Hardisty details the formation of right-wing movements in opposition to the struggle for expansion of rights for women, people of color, and lesbians and gays. Her own experiences spanning three decades as both an activist and observer undergird her analysis in riveting ways. We see her in a stadium filled with Promise Keepers, watching thousands of men pledge in unison to take control of their families, with a mixture of awe, fear, and a lucid understanding of what draws people to such charismatic events.
