EXCERPT: Introduction-In discussions with my friends and students several years ago, I asked if anyone knew of a long-term marriage in which both partners were growing, were genuinely interested in each other, and shared tasks and power equally. Since most of us cold not think of anyone, or of any books describing how equal marriages work, I set out to find couples whose relationships were worthy of emulation...I defined egalitarian couples as those in which husband and wife share moneymaking, housework, child care, and decision making. In all but two of the couples I interviewed both husband and wife do paid work: one Nebraska woman is a full-time homemaker and so is one Missouri man. Only parents were included (including one couple with foster children) because the arrival of a baby often leads couples to a traditional division of labor...
