This exquisite flower album, dating from the 17th century and one of the earliest in Britain, has been in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle since the reign of George IV and until this publication never seen by the public. Marshal was independently wealthy and an avid collector of rare and beatiful species. He painted the new discoveries, the more common garden flowers and some of the humbler wild ones. Over 120 of these are illustrated here, ranging from the very rare Guernsey Lily, recorded by Marshal for the very first time, to 'broken' tulips changing hands at the time for 2000 pounds, to the lowly Ivy-leaved Toadflax. A delightful book of botanical illustrations.
