When plague broke out in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1936 Ralph Tailor, a scrivener, stayed when many fled. As scrivener he was responsible for many of the wills and inventories of his fellow citizens. In listening to and writing the wishes of the dying he was often the principal provider of comfort in their last hours. This book draws on the rich records left by Tailor, along with other sources, to reconstruct life in an early modern city in time of crisis.
