John David Herndon, a "self-retired Vietnam veteran, a 24 year-old high school dropout of Appalachian background, who went AWOL from the army in August 1970, made his way to Paris, and for early two years lived a precarious underground existence there that almost destroyed him. Then, in the Spring of 1972, John decided to come back openly to the United States under the sponsorship of Safe Return, a veterans' organization, to face the charge of in the military."
