The chapters are Foreword, The American Dream, Streak of Violence, The Deep Roots of Poverty, Battle for Equality, The Unwanted war, confrontation, The Political response, and The Quality of American Life. Levitas, a New York Times Magazine editor, supplies text and context for the dozens of black and white photos by Magnum photographers including Arnold, Capa, Lyon and Glinn, which illustrate the conflicts in America in the 1960s over issues such as the Vietnam War, civil rights, youth rebellion, and violent crime. Mitchel R. Levitas was a journalist who won the prestigious George Polk Award in his 20s for a series on labor racketeering and held leading newsroom positions at The New York Times for decades. In a series of appointments from 1976 to 1995, Mr. Levitas oversaw The Times's metropolitan coverage and edited The Week in Review section, The New York Times Book Review, the weekend edition of the paper and the Op-Ed page. A native New Yorker and product of the city's public schools and colleges, he joined the newspaper in 1965 as a writer and editor with The New York Times Magazine. He retired 37 years later, in 2002, as editorial director of book development, a post in which he inaugurated volumes on the best travel writing by Times reporters and anthologies of Times reportage on great historical events. One of his magazine articles, in 1990, explored the rise of homelessness and discussed how the word “homeless” itself had re-entered the national lexicon. Magnum photographers with work in this book include Eve Arnold, Cornell Capa, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Burt Glinn, Philip Jones Griffiths, Charles Harbutt, Danny Lyon, Constantine Manos, Don McCullin, Wayne Miller, Dennis Stock, and Burk Uzzle. Also included is work by Mary Ellen Mark and Hiroji Kubota. profusely illustrated with; A great collection of photographs describing the state of the nation in the 1960s. Includes mini-photo-essays by Lyon, McCullin, Griffiths, Manos, Erwitt and Harbutt. Gorgeously printed. Magnum Photos is an international photographic cooperative owned by its photographer-members, with offices in Paris, New York City, London and Tokyo. It was founded in 1947 in Paris by photographers Robert Capa, David "Chim" Seymour, Maria Eisner, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, William Vandivert, and Rita Vandivert. Its photographers retain all copyrights to their own work. The Magnum cooperative has included photojournalists from across the world, who have covered many historical events of the 20th century. The cooperative's archive includes photographs depicting family life, drugs, religion, war, poverty, famine, crime, government and celebrities. In February 2010, Magnum announced that Michael Dell's venture capital firm MSD Capital had acquired a collection of nearly 200, 000 original press prints of images taken by Magnum photographers. It had formed a partnership with the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin to preserve, catalog, and make photographs available to the general public. [16][17][18] In September 2013 it was announced MSD Capital donated the collection to the Ransom Center. [19] A preliminary inventory is available for researchers who wish to use the collection.
