Elizabeth Lane graduated from the University of Utah and worked as a teacher, a proofreader, and an educational software designer in a job that included writing children's stories. Many of the children's books she wrote are still in print. Her first book for adults, Mistress of the Morning Star , was published in 1980. After publishing five more novels and ghost-writing two others, she began writing for Harlequin's line of historical novels.
