Like most other people of our time who were drawn to George Macdonald, I started with a deep appreciation for C. S. Lewis and moved on from that to appreciate the inspirations he himself claimed. This book is truly a gem. Macdonald was an unorthodox preacher who in his time was often looked at with distaste by his contemporaries. This book tackles many of the issues that he was alienated for and he articulates them withour fear of approach. He often analyzes the scriptures from their literal translation in order to point out misconceptions that are carried by many believers today, but he does so in a way that doesn't leave his readers stranded. He writes in a straightforward way that somehow manages to reveal a deeper poetry than most prose this side of heaven. "I write, not for children," he himself wrote, "but for the child-like, whether they be of five, or fifty, or seventy-five." I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a serious interest in Christianity. It won't simply repeat conventional doctrine and it isn't intended to merely inspire, but to enlighten. Why shouldn't we take the knowledge of scripture and apply it to the universe as a whole, guided of course by the intelligence and sense of conscience God has given us? The book is annotated (and partially translated from the 19th Scottish dialect) by Michael R Phillips, whose grasp of Macdonald's background and dogma is profound.
