Being a popular sketch, therefore, in a popular series, I have purposely avoided, as far as possible, the discussion of recondite controversial topics, and the introduction of dry disquisitions on obscure points of diction or on matters which possess an interest merely antiquarian. I have also slightly modernised the archaic spelling of the extracts I have had occasion to quote, so that the general reader might be able to follow without difficulty the sense of the text.
