First edition of Smeaton's history of Edinburgh. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over green cloth, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, top edge gilt with others uncut, marbled endpapers, colored frontispiece with tissue guard, copiously illustrated with colored tissue-guarded engravings. In very good condition. Scottish journalist, historian, and educator William Henry Oliphant Smeaton became popularly known for is writing on Australian life and literature for various British publications as well as for his adventure and children's fiction novels during the 1890s. Smeaton became associated with the Dent publishing firm during this time and worked with J.M. Dent on the editorial work for the Temple Classics and the Everyman Library series. In addition, he edited several books on Scottish antiquities and English literature including works by William Shakespeare, Thomas Dekker, and John Ford.
