This is a great compilation of hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind stories. If you like tall tales and folk music, and if you are willing to suspend your disbelief, you will love this book.

Excellent, but different
I have one book in the Silver John group, and I really enjoy reading and rereading it. Silver John is a good guy who relies on both Christianity and some form of white magic for protection from evil.
In THE LOST AND THE LURKING, the book I have that made me want to order the full collection in WHO FEARS THE DEVIL, John saves the US, and maybe the world from being taken over by a particularly evil group who rely on hypnotism and spells on their own lower eschelon people, who no longer can make their own udgements on the right or wrong of things.
Written in a Carolina Hills dialect, spoken by a well-educated hero, it has a great 'feeling' to it, helping to build the strength and down-home wisdom of Silver John.
The book I have is beautifully well-written, and I'm sorry that Manly Wade Wellman isn't still spinning Silver John stories for us. I found the book enchanting - pun not intended!
