Occurring in a post war setting in which the Chinese have beaten the US, a young teenage girl is shanghaied and taken to China where she grows up and matures as a slave. She is the narrator of the novel and Mr. Hersey"s depth of knowledge about the Chinese and their culture is quite apparent in this book. He approaches the issue of slavery of whites with the knowledge of the slave trade in America. As he says in the beginning it's like being in someone else's shoes. Mr. Hersey attention to detail in the language and the culture of China is also a plus for this book. He was born there. Could be compared to Jennings' Journeyer and other books of the far east such as Pearl Buck's The Good Earth and Hersey's own A Single Pebble. It is a disturbing book but places everything in perspective and is in my mind Hersey's masterpiece.
