This is a truly wonderful little novel. It leaves you feeling good. Although touted as a war novel it is really a novel about one man's aide to a small village and how people of differing cultures can work together for a common goal. I highly recommend this book. It is a joy to read.

One of Hersey's Best
This is an engagin story, at times funyy, facinating, imformative and sad. I suppose that Hersey may have though of it as his 'war novel' , however, he also wrote "The War Lover", another fine and under-appreciated novel about war.
Hersey was simply one of the finest American novelists that we have produced. Any of his books are a joy to read. He has a great skill in engaging the reader, and pulling the readers' interest into the work he so beautifully creates. It's hard to think of a novelist who created better charachters.
