O'Malley's book is detailed, detailed, detailed! I thought he did a fantastic job at being objective in the historical presentation of what happened at the Second Vatican Council. I was grateful for his brief historical accounts and repetition in chapters about certain people or concepts involved with the Second Vatican Council in the text because of the enormity of the subject matter. With or without a book, SVII was hard-to-follow and O'Malley lays it out nicely and comprehensively.
